3D vs 2D Pattern Making Workflow
Comparing a 3D-first (flatten from simulation) workflow with a traditional 2D-first (draft, then simulate) pattern making workflow.
3D-first: design, then flatten
In a 3D-first workflow, a garment is designed and draped in 3D — either by AI generation or direct 3D modeling — and pattern pieces are produced afterward by flattening the draped shape. This is fast for exploring silhouettes and gets a visually accurate 3D result early, but the flattened pieces usually need pattern-editor cleanup: checking seam lengths match, adding seam allowance correctly, and confirming grainlines make sense for the fabric.
2D-first: draft, then simulate
A 2D-first workflow starts from drafted flat pattern pieces — built from measurements and construction knowledge — and simulates them afterward to check drape and fit. This is the traditional pattern-making path and gives more direct control over exact seam geometry from the start, at the cost of not seeing the 3D result until pieces are drafted.
